I can never possibly picture the British version of Magical Mystery Tour. It was just a 6 song EP of the new music recorded that was included in the film. But the American version added The Beatles' 1967 singles. That's how I know this album, as an LP, not an EP. Usually the British versions of The Beatles albums are the definitive versions, but in this case the American LP takes the take. The boys had a huge feat coming up with the follow up to their groundbreaking Sgt. Pepper album and while the film Magical Mystery Tour wasn't fantastic, it isn't a bad as some people make it out to be. It's rambling, incoherent, basically it makes no fucking sense. But at least they tried something different. Of course, this is coming from an admittedly biased Beatles freak who usually blindly defends everything they've done. People are split between loving and hating the movie, but no one can deny the fantastic music on the album. The album is The Beatles pure psychedelic record, pushing the experimentation of Sgt. Pepper one step further. There are some people who claim that the weakest song is the single Hello Goodbye. Those people are stupid. Do not listen to them. There is no weak spot on the album. Even the seemingly throwaway instrumental Flying serves it's purpose in the context of the album.
Personal Favorites: Everything. It is yet another of The Beatles' perfect albums. All albums from Rubber Soul to Abbey fall under this perfect category.

ReplyDeleteI'm a HUGE Beatles fan (that's what initially drew me to your blog), but I think "Blue Jay Way" is one of the worst tracks ever issued by ANYBODY.
ReplyDeleteI don't think it's a horrible song by any means. Not one of Harrison's best songs, but not bad.
